BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–There’s never a dull moment when working in law enforcement. You never know who or what you may encounter.
New Year’s Eve was certainly no exception for Berkeley County deputies.
On December 31, deputies were out conducting traffic safety checkpoints in the area of College Park Road. At some point during the checkpoint, a tan truck approached.
While speaking to the driver, a deputy noticed defective equipment on the vehicle. The driver was asked to pull over to be cited a warning for the vehicle defect.
The passenger of the vehicle, 33-year-old Kevin Lee Hensarling, refused to give deputies any form of identification and refused to provide a name or date of birth.
Hensarling became irate towards deputies and deputies attempted to remove him from the vehicle, deputies stated. Hensarling actively resisted deputies so he was detained.
While detaining Hensarling, a plastic bag fell from his navel, according to deputies.
Deputies say the plastic bag contained a brown powder substance that tested presumptive for heroin.
Hensarling was then placed under arrest and transported to the Hill Finklea Detention Center.
The driver was cited a warning for the defect and released from the scene.
