BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Nearly 2,000 visitors attended the inaugural “Food Trucks for Hope” event at Carnes Crossroads on March 10th, setting the stage for what organizers hope will be a growing monthly event with a focus on giving back to the community.
Approximately $1,500 was raised during the event for March’s featured charity, My Sister’s House. The April event, scheduled to take place April 14 from noon to 5 pm, will benefit the Berkeley Animal Center.
“Food Trucks for Hope” offers residents and visitors from around the region an opportunity to enjoy an eclectic selection of food and beverage options, live music and family entertainment, all while supporting a featured local non-profit organization each month.
Free to the public, the event takes place on the second Sunday of each month from noon to 5 pm behind the Green Barn at Carnes Crossroads on Hwy. 17A. Each event features 10 – 15 food trucks, activities for kids, live music and other family-friendly entertainment. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs to stay and enjoy the afternoon music and activities.
The following food trucks will be participating in the April 14 “Food Trucks for Hope”: Burgers N’ Freys, Backdraft BBQ, Golden Pineapple, Damiano Wood Fire Pizza, Taco in a Bag, Bacon me Crazy, Sabor, My Big Fat Greek Truck, Kicking Chicken, The Holy City Cupcakes, Kona Ice amd Holly Rolly.
Staff and volunteers from the Berkeley Animal Center will be in attendance to share information about their services and to collect donations and pet supplies. As the featured charity, they’ll receive 10% of the day’s food truck sales.
The idea for a monthly food truck event at Carnes Crossroads originated from Allen and Rachel Carpenter, owners of the Holy City Cupcakes Food Truck, who were looking for a way to give back to the community. They organized their first food truck rodeo at Carnes Crossroads last October as a fundraiser and supply drive to benefit residents affected by Hurricane Florence. They had such a great turnout that they repeated the format again in December with a holiday-themed fundraiser for the Dorchester County Children’s Advocacy Center, and then contacted the Carnes Crossroads Town Association to inquire about making it a regularly-occurring event.
Directions:
From I-26, take Exit 199B for Highway 17 A (North Main Street). Travel three miles towards Carnes Crossroads and the Green Barn. Turn left onto 1st Avenue into the community and follow signs for free parking. ff
