Officials: Developers Withdraw Application for Gippy Annexation

Via National Park Service

MONCKS CORNER, S.C.–Less than two weeks after Moncks Corner’s Planning Commission voted “no” to the current development plans for Gippy Plantation, the developers have since withdrawn their application for annexation into the town of Moncks Corner.

As a result, Moncks Corner town council will not take up the issue at Tuesday night’s council meeting. In fact, it’s nowhere on the upcoming agenda.

“The applicant is no longer seeking to annex into the Town of Moncks Corner,” stated Douglas Polen, the town’s community development director. “They are permitted to reapply in the future, but have not communicated any plans to me to do so at this time.”

The developers, Hoyer Investment Company and D.R. Horton, have pushed for the annexation, in part, so they can build more homes on the historic 800-acre property.

Currently, they want to build about 1,000 homes on lots ranging from 6,000-8,000 square feet. Hundreds of other surrounding acres would be kept as a natural environment and park areas.

While Berkeley County is currently a hotbed for growth, the proposed development has been met by fierce opposition by residents who call the surrounding area home.

Almost 2,000 people have signed an online petition opposing the development.

The Berkeley Observer has reached out to the developers for comment on their application withdrawal as well as inquired about what their next move might be. We are currently awaiting a response.
