BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The unofficial results are in from Tuesday’s Berkeley County Council District 3 special primary.
Republican candidate Phillip Obie II came out ahead of fellow Republican candidate Elaine Barnett. Obie received 90% of the vote while his competitor received 10% of the vote.
Obie will face Democratic candidate Tory Liferidge during the June 25 special election. Liferidge beat out fellow democratic candidate Barbara McGowan during Tuesday’s special primary. Liferidge received 62% of the vote while his competitor received 38% of the vote.
A total of 503 registered voters in Berkeley County cast their ballots in the special primary.
Obie and Liferidge are hoping to win the seat held by county councilman, Ken Gunn. Gunn passed away on February 7, 2019 after a battle with lung cancer. He had served on Berkeley County Council since January 2013.
Any person wishing to vote in the upcoming special election must be registered no later than Sunday, May 26, 2019. Mail-in voter registration forms will be accepted if postmarked by May 28, 2019.
