GOOSE CREEK, S.C.—What was supposed to be just another normal day at school turned out to be anything but, according to one Goose Creek High student.
Belle Dodson, a GCH senior, stated that she was walking into the school from the gym parking lot on Tuesday to a college decision day ceremony when she noticed a car pull into a spot and began honking and flashing their bright lights at her.
Dodson said that she turned around to see if she perhaps knew the person in the car.
She described the vehicle as a black Mercedes Benz Sedan with very tinted windows.
“It looked like one of my friend’s cars but I wasn’t sure,” she stated. “I slowly approached the car but made sure to keep my distance in case I didn’t know the person inside.”
Dodson stated that the driver rolled his window down said to her, “Do you want to make $1,000 a day? You would never have to come back to school or go home again.”
That’s when the high school senior replied, “Excuse me, sir?”
That’s when the driver then repeated, “Come on with me. You’ll never have to go to school again.”
According to Dodson, he began waving a bunch of cash around in his hands. She described him as a young African American man in his 20’s.
Dodson ultimately told the driver that she wasn’t interested and began walking toward the buildings at school. As she did, she said she heard the driver get out of his car. That’s when she picked up the pace and quickly informed a teacher about what had just occurred.
“Administration and law enforcement were immediately notified and the car rushed from campus and ran a traffic light,” stated Dodson. “His license plate number was taken and they are trying to find him.”
Dodson wrote about her experience on social media in a post that’s been shared by hundreds.
“I have read many posts like this on social media outlets and never thought that one day it may happen to me,” she said. “I wrote this post to let young girls know that no matter where you are, you are NEVER safe, not even in the parking lot of your own high school. Please be aware of your surroundings 24/7 and try to travel with someone at all times. I hope you all never have to experience what I did.”
Goose Creek High School’s principal, Shameka Washington, wrote a Facebook post to parents following the incident:
Good afternoon, this is Principal Washington, I wanted to make you aware of a situation that occurred on campus this morning. First, please know that your child is safe.
This morning after first period began, a student was approached by an unknown person on campus in the gym parking lot. This information was reported to administration and immediately shared with law enforcement.
Please know that we are cooperating with law enforcement in this ongoing investigation. Thank you for your continued support of Goose Creek High School.
