VIA CHARLESTON COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

The Tri-County Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony honored the brave men and women who’ve lost their lives in the line of duty.

The event took place on Wednesday at Park Circle in North Charleston.

Dozens of officers from various law enforcement agencies throughout the Lowcountry attended the event, including Hanahan Police Dennis Turner who’s grandfather, a former law enforcement officer, was recognized during the event.

“After 93 years, my great grandfather’s name is now in a place where he will always be honored and never forgotten. Thank you Sheriff Cannon and the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office,” stated Chief Turner.

Since the first known line-of-duty-death in 1791, more than 20,000 U.S. law enforcement officers have made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Tri-County area experienced its first loss in 1879, when Charleston Police Sergeant John Harlow was shot and killed while attempting to break up a disturbance at the intersection of King Street and Calhoun Street

Wednesday’s ceremony honored all law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty, including 71 who have died in the Tri-County area.

The tribute included guest speakers followed by the reading of the names of fallen officers, a 21-gun salute, a flag-folding ceremony and playing of “Taps” and “Amazing Grace.” There was also a moment of silence.
