MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – Old Santee Canal Park celebrated its 30th year of showcasing nature’s flora and fauna against the historical backdrop of America’s first true canal on Saturday.
This family-friendly event featured a guided canoe trip and free canoe rentals, candle-making demonstrations, guided nature walks, tours of the Stony Landing House and a DJ provided favorite party songs.
Activities for children included face painting, crafts and jump castles. The Cast Iron, Bearded Dogs and Two Fat Olives food trucks were on hand with food and beverages for sale. And you can’t have a birthday party without free cake!
Event happenings were free with paid park admission of $3 per person. Senior citizens 65 and older are $2 per person and children 6 and under are free.

Old Santee Canal Park is a 195-acre, nature and historical attraction with 4 miles of boardwalks located at 900 Stony Landing Road in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. It draws approximately 50,000 visitors annually. The park is located on the uppermost point of the west branch of the Cooper River where the Tailrace Canal begins.
An interpretive center features of the story of the Santee Canal, built between 1773 and 1800, is considered the first true canal in America because it connected two different bodies of water. The Berkeley County Museum and Heritage Center is located inside the park. Stony Landing, named for the “Cooper marl” limestone outcroppings found within the park, slopes to the river and Tailrace Canal shoreline where a large floating dock welcomes boaters.
