JAMESTOWN, S.C.–A Jamestown man has died after being hit by a vehicle that left the scene, according to Berkeley County Coroner George Oliver.
On Wednesday night, at approximately 9:42 p.m., Oliver says that the coroner’s office was notified of a vehicle versus pedestrian fatality near 3830 North Highway 17A in Jamestown.
The victim has been positively identified as Alton Hawkins, Jr., a 63-year-old from Jamestown.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
This accident has been classified as a hit and run, Oliver stated.
The SCHP and Coroner’s office are continuing to investigate.
According to SCHP, they believe the person that hit Hawkins was driving a 1997-2006 BMW 3-series sedan, blue-gray in color, which may be a two-door or four-door model.
Officials say the vehicle left the scene traveling north on US-17 Alternate towards Jamestown. The vehicle should have damage to the right front area.
