MONCKS CORNER, S.C.–An early morning apartment fire Wednesday has left more than 30 people homeless.
The fire occurred around 12:30 a.m. at the Santee Run Apartments near the 200 block of Bonnoitt Street.
“We lost our home. We are so thankful and lucky that everyone got out safely but to say that we are devastated is an understatement,” stated Brittnay Sloan who lived at the apartment building.
“Say a prayer for everyone that lost there home. Kids and the elderly lost their homes tonight,” stated Shanice Thomas who was one of the fortunate ones whose Santee Run apartment was not destroyed.
To assist residents in need of a temporary place to stay, the American Red Cross opened a shelter at Point North Church located at Bilo Drive Suite C in Moncks Corner.
“We urge evacuees coming to the shelter to bring their medications, pillows and anything that will help make them comfortable at the shelter,” stated Louise Welch Williams, regional CEO for the organization.
A Moncks Corner business, Happy Faces Childcare, is also currently accepting donations for families who lost everything in the fire.
“If you can help it is greatly appreciated. Clothes, shoes, anything that people can help with would be great,” stated Tina Hughes Pearson, the director at Happy Faces Childcare. “Some of the people lost everything. Others have items that are water damaged, smoke damaged, and everyone will have to find a new place to live.”
