John Williams, 72, was charged with Embezzlement of Public Funds, Value $10,000 or more.
Investigators say the crime occurred between January 30, 2014 and April 25, 2014.
The SLED investigation was requested by the Berkeley County Rural Fire Board Tax Advisory Committee.
According to SLED, Williams, while a board member of the Pineville/Russellville Rural Fire Department (PRFD) fraudulently appropriated approximately $11,44.82 in public funds from the PRFD.
Williams was chairman of the board of the PRFD at the time in a position in which he was entrusted with the safekeeping, transfer and disbursement of these funds, investigators say.
SLED investigators say that the PRFD board approved the purchase of six computers from Williams’s company, ATAC Computers in 2014.
Williams submitted written proposals and invoices to PRFD Treasureer, Neomia Dingle, for the sale of new or referbuished coputers.
Dingle paid Williams via check from the PRFD checking account.
Numerous witnesses attested that no computers were ever delivered to the PRFD.
Investigators say Williams was unable to provide documents and receipts to account for any computers or parts sold, as required by law.
