Eight different fire departments responded to a two-alarm structure fire at the Spring Hill apartment complex located at 100 Swift Blvd. in Goose Creek Wednesday morning. The call came in at 10:15 a.m., according to Berkeley County spokesperson Hannan Moldenhauer.
Approximately 16 units located inside one of the buildings are believed to have suffered some level of damage, either from fire, water or smoke, according to Goose Creek Rural Fire Department.
The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time.
Red Cross team members are currently providing comfort kits, containing personal hygiene items, and financial assistance for immediate needs to displaced residents of the apartment building.
Williamson say the Red Cross is also providing food and hydration to residents and first responders. Nearly a dozen volunteers were on the scene for several hours Wednesday to make sure residents had what they needed in the wake of the large fire.
The Red Cross, along with its partners, have opened a shelter to help house the families impacted. The shelter will open at 4:30 p.m. on October 2, 2019 and be located at Goose Creek United Methodist Church. The address for the shelter is 142 Red Bank Road in Goose Creek.
“Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this morning’s massive fire,” said Louise Welch-Williams, the Regional CEO of the Red Cross of South Carolina. “The Red Cross remains committed to helping residents recover from the blaze.”
The Red Cross will continue to stay in contact with its partners to see if any additional assistance is needed, Williamson stated.
