BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – The Whitesville Fire Department has been awarded a $100,000 public safety grant that will go toward the department’s future Cane Bay Fire Station, according to Colt Roy, the public information for the department.

This grant will be used exclusively for furnishings and equipment for the new station at Cane Bay which is currently under construction.

Senator Paul Campbell presented the check to Fire Chief Tim Stephenson and Board Member George Bratcher Thursday

Senator Campbell has worked throughout the budget process over the last three years to make this grant possible, Roy stated.

“This grant will ensure the public that the Firefighters are not using hand-me-down furnishings and equipment in the new fire station, and that will go a long way in making the fire station a premier location for the Whitesville Fire District,” said Chief Tim Stephenson.

As the progress of the new station construction continues, Roy stated that the fire department is looking forward to inviting the public to a grand opening ceremony where the new facility can be toured.

This event will be announced as the completion date of the new station draws closer, he added.

The Whitesville Fire Department was formed in 1967 and has protected the Whitesville Fire District for 50-years without interruption in service. It became a 501(c)(3) incorporation in 1985. It currently staffs two fire stations with 52 volunteers and 3 Engines, a 105-foot Aerial Device (ladder truck), a 100-foot tower truck, an Advanced Life Support Quick Response Vehicle, three Chief Officer Vehicles, a Brush Truck, two service trucks, one Heavy Rescue Truck, and one apparatus maintenance vehicle.

The district is just under 50 square miles and includes portions of the Town of Moncks Corner. The department also contracts with the Town of Moncks Corner to protect portions of Highway 52 and the associated subdivisions along this highway.
