HANAHAN, S.C. – The Hanahan Police Department is sending out a warning to residents regarding a popular social security scam targeting some of its residents.
According to police, the scammers are calling residents and identifying themselves with the U.S. Social Security Administration.
As part of the social security scam, the caller will then tell the person they need to verify their personal information. They will commonly ask for an individual’s date of birth and social security number.
Police, however, are urging residents to not fall for it. Police say once that information is given to the caller, they will then use that information to commit fraud.
As a friendly reminder, police say the Social Security Administration will never call someone and ask to confirm information over the phone. They will also never threaten to arrest anyone if they don’t comply.
If anyone receives a phone call from someone asking to confirm your personal information, hang up immediately. Next, notify your nearest police department. Never fall for this notorious social security scam.
