HANAHAN, S.C. – The young son of a longtime Hanahan firefighter is proving to be a fighter just like his father. Jaxon Lubbehusen, 2, is currently living with a rare congenital heart defect known as anomalous left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery (ALCAPA).
According to MedlinePlus, the serious medical condition occurs when the developing blood vessel to the heart muscle does not attach correctly during the mother’s pregnancy.
When the heart doesn’t get enough oxygen due to ALCAPA, the heart muscle can weaken or die, similar to having a heart attack. If left untreated, the condition can lead to cardiomyopathy and heart failure, according to Boston Children’s Hospital.
Despite the obstacles associated with having a congenital heart defect, Jaxon is pushing through and determined to have a normal childhood. On Jan. 9, Nick Lubbehusen said his son had surgery to fix the problem and is optimistic about his little boy’s future.
“The surgery went very well and doctors are optimistic,” Nick said after his son’s procedure. “We still have a long road ahead of us, but with your [the community’s] help and support Jaxon will be back to giving high fives before you know it.”
Jaxon is currently home and continues to recover from surgery.
A GoFundMe page was recently created to help his family pay for his medical expenses. So far, more than $1,300 have poured in since the page’s launch this month. Organizers hope to raise at least $10,000. [To donate, click here.]
On March 28, the South Carolina Stingrays will host First Responders Night. Tickets are $15 and three dollars of each ticket will benefit Jaxon’s recovery. Tickets can be purchased at this link. Additional details can be found on this flyer:
