Berkeley Electric Cooperative is warning members to be on the lookout for phone scammers trying to take advantage of the novel coronavirus pandemic. Scammers are actively threatening members with having their electrical service cutoff unless immediate payment is made over the phone.
In response to the pandemic, Berkeley Electric announced it was suspending disconnections for nonpayment on March 14. The cooperative also only accepts phone payments through its automated system so if members receive this type of call, they can simply hang up. If members have questions or concerns, they should look up the phone number for their local district office to make sure it is correct and should never use a provided call back number.
Berkeley Electric would like to remind members that they are still responsible for paying for the energy they use and are encouraged to pay what they can to avoid a large bill when normal services resume.
To help protect the health of employees and members, Berkeley Electric’s office lobbies are closed until further notice. Members can manage their accounts online at berkeleyelectric.coop or through the drive-thrus at Goose Creek, Johns Island and Moncks Corner office locations.
The largest electric cooperative in South Carolina, Berkeley Electric serves more than 100,000 meters and over 87,000 member-owners living in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties.
