BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control announced 232 new cases of the coronavirus Friday and nine additional COVID-19 deaths.
This brings the total number of people confirmed to have COVID-19 in South Carolina to 8,407 and those who have died to 380, according to SCDHEC officials.
Eight of those deaths occurred in elderly individuals in Cherokee (1), Clarendon (1), Fairfield (1), Florence (1), Pickens (1) and Sumter (3), counties, and one of the deaths occurred in a middle-aged individual in Clarendon County (1).
In Berkeley County, state health officials reported two new coronavirus cases, bringing the number of total reported cases to 201. Despite the number being reported, SCDHEC officials estimate there could be as many as 1,235 in the county.

As of Friday morning, 3,405 inpatient hospital beds are available and 6,970 are in use, which is a 67.18 percent statewide hospital bed utilization rate. Of the 6,970 inpatient beds currently used, 423 are occupied by patients who have either tested positive or are under investigation for COVID-19.
As of Thursday, DHEC’s Public Health Laboratory has conducted 23,980 tests for COVID-19. Of these tests, 2,963 were positive and 21,017 were negative. A total of 109,616 total tests by both DHEC’s Public Health Laboratory and private labs have been conducted in the state. DHEC’s Public Health Laboratory is operating extended hours and is testing specimens seven days a week.
