BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – One person is dead and another is in custody following an officer-involved shooting that started with a pursuit on I-95 early Friday morning.
According to South Carolina Highway Patrol Col. Christopher Williamson, troopers clocked a vehicle traveling 104 mph on I-95 and attempted a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle, however, refused to stop and a pursuit began.
Troopers and the driver of the fleeing vehicle eventually made their way onto I-26 towards Charleston. Williamson said at some point troopers requested assistance. Around 2:30 a.m., deputies with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office joined the pursuit, which ended at the rest area near the College Park Road exit in the Ladson area.
“What we know at this point is that the exchange of gunfire occurred between Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office deputies, South Carolina Highway Patrol and the suspect,” Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis said. “At this time, one person is in custody. There is one person at the scene that is deceased.”
The person killed in the pursuit has not been identified at this time. No further details were provided on the person taken into custody.
Lewis stressed that no deputies or troopers were injured during and after the pursuit. Two deputies involved in the case have been placed on administrative leave with pay, the sheriff said. Following an officer-involved shooting, administrative leave is standard protocol and is not an indication of any wrongdoing by the deputies involved.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has been called in to investigate the incident.
The Berkeley Observer will update this story as more information becomes available.
