BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – A man is in the hospital following an early morning accident over the weekend in Berkeley County.
According to the Sandridge Volunteer Fire Department, firefighters and EMS responded to single-vehicle wreck around 2 a.m. on Sunday.
Firefighters said several witnesses told them that street racing was to blame and contributed to one driver’s injuries. However, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol, improper lane change played a role in the collision.
“Our report indicates that a 2012 Kia and a 2015 Chevy were traveling northbound on SC 27 (Old Gilliard Road). The driver of the Chevy attempted to pass the Kia unlawfully,” SCHP Corporal Matt Southern told The Berkeley Observer. “The Kia apparently then attempted to pass the Chevy unlawfully, ran off the left side of the road and then overturned.”
Southern said the driver of the Kia was transported to an area hospital. Both drivers were cited for improper passing, troopers said. Both were also wearing seatbelts.
