BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.—A popular Berkeley County attraction is getting ready to open its doors back to the public for the first time in more than two months. Cypress Gardens, which is located in Moncks Corner, will welcome guests once again starting Tuesday, May 26.
“I cannot wait for everybody to come back out and see what all we’ve done,” Cypress Gardens Park Director Heather McDowell said. “We’ve been pressure washing buildings, painting, doing a lot of planting – just a lot of maintenance that we can’t do when everybody’s here.”
Employees have also been rebuilding bridges, getting the trails ready and restocking the gift shop, which will include some new homegrown items.
“Our horticulture department has also been doing a great job, so when you are able to get out here, it’s going to look a lot different, and it’s going to look great,” Cypress Gardens Naturalist Nick Yoder said.
Staff at Cypress Gardens said they are both ready and look forward to welcoming the public back to the popular attraction, which has been a favorite family destination in Berkeley County since 1932.
“Our flowers are blooming. Everything is bright and beautiful out here. The grass is green, the temperature is wonderful. The gators are out,” McDowell said.
Cypress Gardens shut down March 17 following the coronavirus pandemic. On April 13 during the closure, the facility would have celebrated its one-year anniversary of reopening following the 2015 “flood of a thousand years.” During that time, the park sustained major water damage, forcing the park to close for nearly four years as repairs were made.
“On that date, April 13 we were all sitting out here, and it was just sad because we had been closed for almost four years and then we finally opened, and this happened. It was very sad and very heartbreaking,” McDowell said.
During the upcoming reopening, park officials said restrictions will be in place to reflect federal and state safety guidelines.
