JAMESTOWN, S.C. – The Berkeley County community recently came out in full force to honor the longest-serving fire chief in South Carolina. For 52 years, Jamestown Fire Chief David O. Shuler has dedicated his life to his community as a first responder.
“Chief Shuler, as we all know loves his community, and we love and sincerely appreciate him for his many years of service,” said Pastor Wayne with Jamestown Baptist Church.
Currently battling a serious illness, Shuler left Roper Hospice Cottage in Mt. Pleasant and returned home Thursday, making quite the grand entrance along the way thanks to a fire truck escort.
To show how much the fire chief is loved and appreciated, the church organized a parade in his honor the same day of his return home. The event, which included a procession of fire trucks and police cruisers from several different agencies, started at St. James United Methodist Church on French Santee Road and traveled down Milwood Loop.
“Chief, we are praying for you. Company 26 was honored to ride along with so many others on yesterday to show you how much we love you,” Shulerville-Honey Hill RFD posted on its official Facebook page.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Chief Shuler and his family in the upcoming days,” Hell Hole Inc wrote on social media.
Following Shuler’s return home, he was welcomed by the sound of horns, sirens and members of the community. He is currently under hospice care at home.
