GOOSE CREEK, S.C. – Volunteers with the American Red Cross are helping approximately 50 people affected by an early morning fire Saturday at the Coventry Green apartment complex on Gainsborough Drive.
Goose Creek Fire Battalion Chief Jared Harris told Live 5 News that the fire happened before 6:30 a.m. Fortunately, there were no injuries. Crews said 24 units were destroyed or damaged in the fire.
Red Cross volunteers said they are providing comfort kits containing personal hygiene items, and financial assistance for immediate needs to the families impacted.
“Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this morning’s large fire and the Red Cross of South Carolina remains committed to helping them recover amid this COVID19 pandemic,” said Ashley Henyan, the Executive Director of the Lowcountry Chapter. “This is a reminder that fires can happen anywhere, at any time. We are committed to continue carrying out the mission of the Red Cross while keeping our team and those we serve safe.”
In addition to immediate needs, Red Cross team members said they are providing virtual mental and spiritual care assistance to anyone that may need it. The Red Cross will continue to stay in contact with its partners to see if any additional assistance is needed.
Approximately five hours after the fire broke out, first responders remained on the scene. Yellow caution tape blocked anyone from getting too close to the damaged building.
Mayor Greg Habib visited the site of the damaged apartment building and said he was proud of the city’s fire firefighters and the other agencies that assisted with extinguishing the flames and making sure residents got to safety.
“They arrived to a fully engaged three-story structure fire. You may know, this is not common for our department, but it is what they train for, and it showed. They were able to stop the fire before it got to other buildings,” the mayor said. “They made four ‘grabs,’ which literally means they saved the lives of four people. Plus, they went back in to rescue Taco the dog. All of our firemen are safe and uninjured, as are all of the residents.”
