SOUTH CAROLINA – About an hour after the polls closed Tuesday, President Donald J. Trump was declared the winner in the Palmetto State by the Associated Press.

The win comes as no surprise. The state has traditionally voted heavily Republican for almost half a century. According to 270ToWin.com, the last time a Democratic presidential candidate won South Carolina was in 1976 when Jimmy Carter (D-Georgia) defeated incumbent Gerald Ford (R-Michigan). That was 44 years ago.

Based on the forecasted results from the AP and early ballot tallies from around the state, Democratic challenger and former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden will lose South Carolina’s nine electoral votes to Trump.

Trump won a landslide victory also in 2016, running up a wide lead over Democrat Hillary Clinton in South Carolina, leading by an almost a 3-to-2 margin.
