BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – If you’re a Santee Cooper customer or a member of the state’s electric cooperatives, you may receive a refund check in the mail in the coming days. Whatever you do, though, don’t toss it in the garbage. It is, in fact, the real deal.
The money is a direct result of a $520 million settlement of a class-action lawsuit filed on behalf of Santee Cooper’s approximately two million electric customers who paid for the failed construction of the co-op’s V.C. Sumner nuclear power plant in Jenkinsville, SC in 2017.
Refunds are going to people who were customers between Jan. 2007 and Jan. 31, 2020. Eligible class members should receive the refund checks between Nov. 13 and Nov. 27, 2020. Customers can expect refunds or credits between $50 to just over $500, according to WLTX-TV.
Customers who currently have an active account with Santee Cooper or one of twenty specific electrical cooperatives and their total award amount is less than $25 will receive a bill credit.
Settlement award amounts are final and cannot be negotiated. For customers who receive a refund check, it’s important to note that it is only valid for 120 days from the issue date. Recipients are encouraged to deposit the check promptly.
For recipients who have questions about the award, contact the Settlement Administrators at 1-833-947-0894 or P.O. Box 3127, Portland, OR 97208-3127.
