MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – Latorie Lloyd Walker has won a seat on town council following Tuesday’s special election runoff.
“Congratulations to Ms. Walker, I look forward to serving with her on town council,” said Mayor Michael Lockliear following her win. “Her business experience and passion for small business will be an asset to Moncks Corner town council.”
During the Nov. 10 special election, Walker came in first place, with 275 votes (38.41 percent). However, for a candidate to be declared the winner, he or she must receive the majority of the votes cast.
At the time, her competitor, Michael Doty, received 174 of the vote (24.30 percent).
The results from Tuesday’s runoff are as follows:
- Latorie Lloyd Walker: 316 votes (52.84 percent)
- Michael Doty: 282 votes (47.16 percent).
According to Walker, who is a business owner and local realtor, she is looking forward to serving her community as a new member of town council.
“My heart is so full right now and I am at a loss for words. However, I want to let all of you know how grateful I am for you! The work is just beginning and I’m honored for the opportunity to serve the Town of Moncks Corner!” Walker said via social media following her win. “Congratulations to Mike Doty for a great campaign! It has been a pleasure getting to know you on this journey, and I wish you continued success.”
Walker’s win comes after former councilmember Chadwick Sweatman resigned in August of this year following backlash he received from a controversial post he made on Facebook, which included an image of Hillary Clinton in blackface.
Walker will be sworn in at the regularly scheduled town council meeting on Dec. 15 in the council chambers.
