BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – A Columbia man is behind bars after deputies said he was found to be in possession of a large quantity of drugs and a gun following a short chase on I-26 on Friday night.
Coleman Douglas Newman, 24, has been charged with possession with the intent to distribute marijuana, possession with the intent to distribute schedule IV narcotics, possession with the intent to distribute crack, possession with the intent to distribute cocaine and unlawful possession of a firearm.
On Friday night, A Berkeley County deputy was patrolling an area of I-26 when he saw a Nissan Titan driven by Newman failing to maintain its lane, according to the sheriff’s office.
Concerned for Newman’s safety and the other drivers on the road, the deputy tried to conduct a traffic stop. However, deputies said Newman disregarded the deputy’s lights and sirens and continued driving in an erratic matter.
According to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, Newman apparently came to his senses, several miles later and stopped. Assisting deputies arrived on the scene and attempted to take Newman into custody when he began to actively resist them.
After deputies detained Newman, officers said that Newman insisted he did not stop “because his tire was flat.” Deputies said they checked his vehicle and all four tires were correctly inflated.
Newman reportedly told deputies he came to Charleston for a fishing trip; however, deputies said he was not in possession of any fishing equipment.
Newman was placed under arrest for failure to stop for blue lights. Before towing his vehicle, deputies conducted an inventory of the vehicle and discovered that Newman was also in possession of a large quantity of drugs.
Deputies said they recovered 54 gross grams of marijuana, 90 schedule IV pills, 6.9 gross grams of crack, 1.5 gross grams of cocaine and one Springfield firearm.
Newman was booked into the Hill Finklea Detention Center in Moncks Corner.
