MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – It’s an alarming number. Every day, almost 30 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes — that’s one person every 50 minutes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Alcohol reduces the function of the brain, impairing thinking, reasoning and muscle coordination. All these abilities are essential to operating a vehicle safely.
Drunk-driving crashes claim more than 10,000 lives per year, the NHTSA reports. In South Carolina, 3,299 people have died in crashes involving an alcohol-impaired driver between 2009 and 2018.
To increase awareness and show the dangers of driving while impaired, the Berkeley County Prevention Board will host its 31st annual candlelight memorial service on Dec. 15. The event will also commemorate victims and families who have been affected by a drunk or drugged driver.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the event, which starts at 7 p.m., will be held virtually via Facebook Live.
Upon request, victims’ family members and/or friends may have a candle lit for their loved one and a photo shared. Send all photos and information to the Berkeley County Prevention board at [email protected] by Dec. 1.
