BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – The Berkeley County Board of Education will hold a special Board meeting Monday, Dec. 14 evening beginning at 5:30 p.m.
According to Berkeley County School Board Member Mac McQuillin, the meeting does not involve learning pathways. Instead, it has been called so that the board can receive legal advice from its employment lawyer, Brandon Gaskins, regarding how how it can legally structure the employee bonus payments.
At the last school board meeting, members voted to give employees of Berkeley County School District a one-time loyalty bonus to be paid on Dec. 15, 2020. The board voted to approve a $1000 bonus to all BCSD full-time employees and a $500 bonus to all BCSD part-time employees.
“Because there is some uncertainty about the constitutionality of the bonus in its current form, it was recommended that the board call a special meeting tomorrow to receive legal advice to consider any recommended changes regarding the structure of the proposed bonus,” McQuillin said.
“Because an expectation of the bonus arriving before Christmas was created, Michael Ramsey, Sally Wofford and I promptly requested this meeting so that we can fix the issue and allow for the previously approved payments to be issued before Christmas in a legal manner,” McQuillin added.
