BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – The deadline to apply for Berkeley County’s four percent special assessment credit is Jan. 15, 2021 for the 2020 tax year.
The credit applies to people a legal residence, active duty military and agricultural property.
Below is an explanation of each credit:
- LEGAL RESIDENCE: Apply if you recently purchased a new home that will be your primary residence or have made changes to your deed (ex: add or removed an owner, Life Estate, Trust, or an owner is deceased). Failure to apply in a timely manner may cause your mortgage payment to increase.
- ACTIVE MILITARY DUTY: Apply if you’re an active duty military member currently receiving the 4% Legal Residence credit and received orders to serve away from South Carolina.
- AGRICULTURAL: Apply if you’ve recently purchased or inherited property that meets the state requirement(s) for this credit. To qualify for this credit, you must own at least five acres of timberland or 10 acres of pasture land.
