BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – Some Foxbank Plantation residents in Moncks Corner are fighting to get the South Carolina Department of Transportation to make two busy intersections that lead into their neighborhood safer.
Homeowners recently launched a Change.org petition calling for a new traffic light at the intersection of Foxbank Plantation Blvd. and Highway 52 as well as acceleration lanes at the same intersection and at the intersection of Red Leaf Blvd. and Highway 52. As of Monday, nearly 1,300 people have signed the petition.
“Rapid growth and poor infrastructure leads to fatalities. Too bad we have to push for this and not the county or state,” one person wrote on the petition’s page.
“I am signing because I used to live in Foxbank and that intersection has been dangerous for years, with the addition of the school, fire station, and commercial space, it is unbelievable to me that the light hasn’t been installed,” said a former Foxbank resident. “The community and our children deserve better. No one should fear for their lives every day while navigating an intersection which we have the ability to address.”
There have been at least 20 accidents each year in the past three years at the intersection of Foxbank Plantation Blvd and Highway 52, according to the Moncks Corner Police Department.
Petition supporters argue that the addition of a traffic light would dramatically reduce the number of accidents in the area, control the flow of school traffic and allow the fire department to exit the neighborhood more easily in the event of an emergency. Traffic coming out of Moncks Corner would also be improved without the frequent collisions blocking traffic, they said.
Those who support the petition also want the SCDOT to conduct a traffic study for the Foxbank area. However, a spokesperson for SCDOT said that several traffic studies have already been conducted – including one in the last three months. The research showed a light is not needed at this time, the spokesperson said.
However, some Foxbank residents aren’t buying it – and hope something is done before someone loses their life.
“With the growing number of homes and businesses, the problem will only become worse until something is done,” the petition reads. “We prefer SCDOT to take preemptive action rather than waiting for a preventable, serious incident to occur.”
