SOUTH CAROLINA – When it comes to the transmission rate and vaccinating South Carolinians against the coronavirus, the Palmetto State ranks at the bottom of the list, according to a new WalletHub study.
The study compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across five key metrics. The data set included the rates of COVID-19 transmission, positive testing, hospitalizations and death, as well as the share of the eligible population getting vaccinated.
In the end South Carolina took the No. 5 spot as the “least safe state” to be in during the coronavirus pandemic.
The state also ranked near the bottom – 47th in the country – when it comes to vaccinating residents against COVID-19. Here’s how South Carolina ranked in other key metrics:
- 50th – Positive Testing Rate
- 45th – Hospitalization Rate
- 39th – Death Rate
- 24th – Transmission Rate
Whether it’s South Carolina or elsewhere, a state’s level of safety is important for its economy, according to Jill Gonzalez, WalletHub analyst.
“It determines the way businesses are allowed to operate. States will not remove their current COVID-19 restrictions until certain safety benchmarks are met, such as the reduction of the transmission rate to specific levels. Until it is safe enough to remove these restrictions, business will continue to be stunted across the U.S.,” she said.
Only four other states scored worse than South Carolina. They were Nevada (No. 4), Mississippi (No. 3), Alabama (No. 2) and Arizona (No. 1).
According to the study, the top 10 safest states during the coronavirus pandemic are:
- Alaska
- Vermont
- Colorado
- Montana
- North Dakota
- Hawaii
- Iowa
- Utah
- Minnesota
- Missouri
