BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – If you’re tired of seeing the many orange barrels that line the intersection of U.S. Highway 17A and Bethera and Cane Gully Roads in Berkeley County, an end could soon be in sight.
Roadwork in that area is expected to be completed sometime this spring, the South Carolina Department of Transportation told The Berkeley Observer. Selected as part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s highway safety improvement program, the project originally got the greenlight to move forward with construction in mid-June 2020.
According to the SCDOT, the goal is to minimize future traffic accidents. Approximately 6,500 vehicles pass through the area daily, the SCDOT said. Over a five year period, there have been 30 crashes in the area, over half of which resulted in an injury.
The improvement project consists of modifying two intersections along U.S. Highway 17A northeast of Moncks Corner. Bethera Road will be realigned at the intersection of U.S. Highway 17A and left-turn lanes will be added at Bethera Road.
A left-turn lane will also be added at U.S. Highway 17A and Harristown Road, in turn, allowing vehicles to safely turn. A portion of Cane Gully Road will also be closed and redirected to Bethera Road.
The project has been funded through USDOT’s highway safety improvement program. The contractor bid amount for the project was $1,345,216.05, the SCDOT said. However, total obligated funds is $1,902,794.14, which includes preliminary engineering, right of way and construction costs.
