Old Santee Canal Park Captures ‘Mysterious Guest’ On Video

COURTESY: Old Santee Canal Park

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – Employees at Old Santee Canal Park recently captured a “mysterious guest” on their trail cameras.

The four-legged creature was seen roaming around the park’s trails on May 29 shortly after 1 a.m.

The only problem is, no one is 100 percent sure what it is they saw.

Could it be a wild boar? Large dog? A black bear? Your guess is as good as ours, but the opinions are mixed.

The park shared the video on social media recently and got a variety of responses. Some people suggested that it was possibly a fox, cougar or, yes, even a raccoon.

One thing for sure, it’s highly unlikely that the park’s mystery guest is a cougar. According to the South Carolina Wildlife Federation, there are no wild reproducing populations of cougars, also known as a panther or mountain lion, in the state. However, an individual animal is occasionally observed, or killed, as a result of someone releasing a “pet” cougar that got to be too much for them to handle.

If we were a betting person, which we’re not, but if were were, we say the “mystery guest” is a wild pig. According to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, wild pigs have been present in coastal South Carolina since they were released by the Spanish in the 1500s.

What do you think it is? Let us know in the comments below.
