BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – Berkeley County Coroner George Oliver announced Monday his plans to retire after his term in office ends Dec. 31, 2022.
“It was with much thought, prayers and support off my family that I have made this decision,” Oliver said in a statement. “It has been a great honor and a privilege to serve the citizens of Berkeley County as coroner.”
Prior to joining the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office in 2006 as a deputy coroner, Oliver spent 27 years as a South Carolina Law Enforcement (SLED) agent. He was officially promoted to chief deputy in 2011.
After the retirement of then Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury, Oliver was elected to the position in 2018.

“When I retired from SLED, I developed such a big appreciation for the coroner’s office and what they do. We don’t just run around and pronounce people dead,” Oliver said in 2017 when he announced his election run for coroner. “We provide comfort, closure and an occasional shoulder to cry on. Oftentimes, families have many questions. We do our best to be accommodating and answer their questions to the best of our ability.”
Oliver is married with three children. He is a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #19 and Moncks Corner United Methodist Church.
