MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – Licensed veterinary technician Kate Laflin has many loves. Two of them include cats and coffee, which has inspired her to move forward with her plans to eventually open Berkeley County’s first cat café.

“My career [as a vet tech] isn’t really one where you can work to retirement age with, so this is my plan! I always joked about quitting my job and working for a coffee shop, on particularly stressful days,” she said. “This plan is even better, cats and coffee!”

Laflin, who is originally from Deleware but has called Summerville home since 1996, is actively working on a location in Moncks Corner and funding to make Catnip & Coffee LLC a reality. The goal is to make the business a place where people can drink coffee, beer, or wine and adopt local cats, she said.

“I used to work at Berkeley Animal Center (BAC) as a licensed veterinary technician, and continue to take kitty medical fosters when able. I volunteer with surgeries as well,” she said. Having lived in Berkeley County for over 20 years, I have seen the rapid growth they are undergoing. Specifically, Berkeley Country is the 9th largest county in SC, with an 11-year growth rate of 34.38 percent, which is larger than both Charleston and Georgetown, which both have established cat cafes.”

According to Laflin, she recently started a Kickstarter campaign in hopes of generating $12,000 to help get Catnip & Coffee LLC off the ground.

“I do have a private investor and have items in storage to move into our location once it’s confirmed and renovated to fit our needs,” she said.
