BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – Officers with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are investigating an inmate’s death in Berkeley County.
In an email to The Berkeley Observer, a SLED spokesperson confirmed that the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office contacted the agency shortly after 7 a.m. Monday, requesting that it look into the death of an inmate at the Hill Finklea Detention Center.
Chief Deputy Darnell Hartwell with the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office said the inmate was found unresponsive at the jail. First responders did attempt to revive him but were unsuccessful.
The deceased inmate has been identified as Justice Roemello Rogers, 27, of Hanahan.
An autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday, Hartwell said.
“No other details are available from SLED at this time as agents investigate,” Renée Wunderlich, SLED Director of Public Information, said.
The jail is located at 300 California Avenue in Moncks Corner.
