Elderly Woman In Garden Attacked By Escaped Pit Bull: Berkeley County Sheriff

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – An elderly woman working in her garden has been hospitalized with serve injuries following a pit bull attack in Berkeley County.

The attack happened Tuesday just before 4 p.m. in the Santee Circle community along the 1000 block of Cornerstone Drive.

According to the incident report, a Berkeley County deputy responding to the scene found the 78-year-old victim lying on her back in the kitchen area of her home with severe lacerations to her neck, chin and arms. She also had several bite marks on her right leg.

“She was being tended to by friends and neighbors who were attempting to comfort her and prevent further bleeding,” the deputy said in the report.

As soon as EMS arrived, deputies said the woman was taken by ambulance to Trident Hospital in North Charleston.

Prior to the attack, a deputy said a woman was walking her pit bull on a leash and harness when she saw the victim working in her backyard garden on Cornerstone Drive. She decided to go over and speak with her.

The deputy said the dog somehow got loose and began attacking the victim.

The dog’s owner told deputies that she did everything she possibly could to get the dog away from the victim, according to the report.

During the attack, the sheriff’s office said a man passing by saw the attack and stopped to help.

The deputy said the man was carrying a Beretta 9mm pistol and was instructed by the dog’s owner
to shoot the dog.

The man shot the dog’s neck at the base of its head, killing it, according to the report.
