BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.- The Berkeley County community is rallying behind a Moncks Corner couple who lost their toddler to COVID-19 this week.

“God wanted him home, so we had to let him go. Please keep us in your prayers. Empty doesn’t describe it enough. But God is good and we trust that we will see him again one day. My brother said it best, that William is sitting on Jesus’ knee telling him all about us down here and how we loved him,” Jeff Moss, a youth pastor at Santee Circle Community Church, posted to Facebook on Tuesday.”

As many kids dressed up in costume and went door-to-door seeking candy on Halloween, William, the 2-year-old son of Jeff and his wife, Brittany, remained hospitalized and on life support after COVID-19 and pneumonia shut down his small body. It was just hours later on Tuesday that the couple announced his passing.

“With broken hearts and tear-stained everything we run, march, walk and mostly just slowly crawl towards the day that we hug him close again,” Brittany, William’s mother, said. “We are so grateful for all the prayers—keep them coming—and for all the ways you have reached out. It turns out that our ‘village’ is more like an entire country, and we have never been more aware or more in need of our village.”

Less than 24 hours following William’s death, a family friend, Stephen Parris of Moncks Corner, launched an online fundraiser through GoFundMe to benefit the Moss family as they cope with the loss of their youngest child.

“Over the last few days, the Moss family has gone from ordinary life to unspeakable heartache as their 2-year-old William lost a swift and severe battle with COVID,” Parris wrote on the online fundraiser’s page.

“Please consider helping this precious family financially during this season. We have no idea what specific needs there are and will be in the coming weeks and months, but we know there will be many. Our hope is that this expression of love from our community and beyond will give Jeff, Brittany, and their two girls at least a hint of the gratitude we all have for their investment in our kids as they journey through this season,” he continued.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the GoFundMe page for the Moss family has raised nearly $12,000 from 89 donors. If you would like to donate, click here.

St. John’s Christian Academy in Moncks Corner has announced it has also set up the “William Moss Memorial Fund” at Farmers and Merchants Bank to receive financial donations for the Moss family.

“Pastor Jeff has served as a Bible teacher, coach, chapel speaker, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) leader at SJCA for several years, and Brittany has served as our volleyball coach for the past few seasons. Their daughters, Rylee and Saralynn, are in Mrs. Lindberg’s third-grade class and Mrs. Foreman and Mrs. McCants K5 class,” the school posted to its Facebook page Tuesday.

Donations can be made through the SJCA business office, at the concession stand at the football game on Friday night or directly to the bank.

“One hundred percent of the proceeds will be given to Jeff and Brittany,” officials with the private school said.

SJCA’s Booster Club is also selling T-shirts to benefit the Moss family.

“We will have them for pick up Friday afternoon and would like everyone to wear them to the game. All proceeds will go to the Moss Family. Shirts are $20,” school officials said.

Each shirt includes a logo of SJCA’s mascot followed by the words “FAMILY #MOSSSTRONG.” The shirts can be purchased at this link.
