BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – First responders have recovered the bodies of two fishermen from Lake Moultrie, according to the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office.
According to Coroner Darnell Hartwell, his office was notified Tuesday at 1:53 p.m. of a deceased man that was floating near an unoccupied boat on Lake Moultrie in Pinopolis by a resident that lives nearby.
While recovering the first body, Hartwell said crews with a nearby fire department noticed a second body floating in the same area.
Hartwell said the men were positively identified as Jerry Stoots, 75, from Goose Creek and Lee Watkins, 68, of North Charleston.
An autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday to determine the cause and manner of death, the coroner said.
It is estimated that the fishermen were in the water for a short period of time.
The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, Berkeley County Sherriff’s Office Marine Patrol, Moncks Corner Rural Fire Dept and the Charleston County Aviation Unit all assisted.
