GOOSE CREEK, S.C. – The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a shooting killed one man Saturday night. The shooting investigation led to one man being arrested.
Just before 10:30 p.m., deputies responded to the 100 block of Westminster Boulevard in the Goose Creek area of Berkeley County after a woman called 911 to report a family argument.
While enroute to the call, deputies were advised that a male on scene was shot. Deputies arrived on scene and located one male suffering from a gunshot wound and he was pronounced deceased on scene.
The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Earl Goodwater, 53, of Goose Creek.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Goodwater intervened in an altercation between his daughter and a male later identified as Joshua Scott Lee Butler. During the intervention, a physical altercation ensued between Goodwater and Butler and another subject. Butler went to his vehicle and retrieved a handgun and continued the altercation.
During a struggle of the handgun, Goodwater was fatally shot and Butler was shot in the arm. Butler left the scene but returned a short while later.
Butler was arrested and charged with domestic violence in the second degree and Voluntary manslaughter. There are other charges possibly pending against Butler.
The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate.
