GOOSE CREEK, S.C. – A man is in jail after police found several explosive devices in his possession over the weekend. The investigation closed several roads to traffic for about an hour.
According to the Goose Creek Police Department, around 6 p.m. on Saturday, officers responded to the area of Westview Boulevard and Pineview Drive in reference to a suspicious person. Officers said they received a tip that a white man had a gun and was attempting to set off an explosive device.
Once police arrived at the location, they met with the suspect, Michael Paul Mims, in a wooded area adjacent Westview Boulevard.
Police said Mims told them that he had fireworks.
Upon further investigation, officers said they found four homemade explosive devices. The supervisor on scene requested the bomb squad and the traffic on Westview Boulevard from Highway 176 to Pineview was shut down.
Around 7:34 pm, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad arrived on scene, according to GCPD.
The bomb technicians verified the devices contain gunpowder, via an X-ray. The bomb technicians collected the devices from the scene and transported them away for disposal.
Mims was arrested and charged with four counts of possession of a destructive device.
According to jail records, a judge set bond at $40,000 for each charge.
As of Tuesday, Mims remained booked inside the Hill Finklea Detention Center in Moncks Corner.
