MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – Mayor Michael Lockliear recently signed a proclamation in honor of a woman who celebrated her 100th birthday in Moncks Corner last weekend.
“Mrs. Clark is a woman of great faith who loves her church family at Our Lady of Mercy in Charleston. She has dedicated much of her time to volunteering and helping others, assisting with youth group activities, and cooking for the church, which regularly included making her famous sweet potato pie,” a portion of the proclamation reads.
Rosabell Clark was born on May 21, 1923 – a year that included its fair share of famous historical moments. For example, a century ago, insulin was introduced for the treatment of diabetes, King Tut’s burial chamber was opened for the first time, Time Magazine officially launched and women’s one-piece swimming suits began to be worn.

Charlton Heston, the late actor most famous for his movie role as Moses in “The 10 Commandments,” and American politician Bob Dole also share Clark’s birth year. Heston died in 2008 at age 84. Dole died two years ago at age 98.
In addition to the mayor wishing her a happy birthday, Clark, who was born in Charleston, celebrated her big day with family and friends as well as council members Latorie Lloyd, Dewayne Kitts and Chad Sweatman at Pruit Health, a nursing and rehabilitation in Moncks Corner.
While more people today are living longer, Clark and other centenarians make up less than 1 percent of the U.S. population, according to statistics. About 85 percent of them are women, Boston University reports.
