44 Citations, 65 Warnings Issued Memorial Day Weekend: BCSO

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – In an effort to keep drivers safe and minimize accidents over the Memorial Day weekend, Berkeley County deputies stayed busy conducting traffic safety operations.

“We are pleased to announce that for the 2023 Memorial Day Weekend, there were ZERO traffic-related fatalities!” the sheriff’s office posted to social media.

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office conducted two traffic safety checkpoints throughout the weekend between the north and south ends of the county. Deputies also received assistance from the Moncks Corner Police Department.

The following citations were issued for a total of 44 citations:

  • DUI: 3
  • DUS: 7
  • Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle: 1
  • Speeding: 8
  • Expired Tags: 3
  • No Driver’s License: 9
  • Improper Display: 2
  • Open Container: 3
  • Seatbelt Violation: 1
  • Failure to Dim High Beams: 1
  • Operating Unregistered Motor Vehicle: 3
  • No Proof of Insurance: 1
  • Disregard Stop Sign: 1
  • Driving on the wrong side of the road: 1

The following warnings were issued for a total of 65 warnings:

  • Speeding: 25
  • Pedestrian Contacts: 2
  • Driver’s License Violation: 4
  • Improper Turn: 1
  • Defective Equipment: 7
  • Seatbelt Violation: 5
  • Improper Lane Use: 2
  • Vehicle License Violation: 9
  • Improper Lane Change: 5
  • Disregard Stop sign: 2
  • Disregard Traffic Light: 1
  • Failure to Dim: 1
  • Failure to Yield Right of Way: 1

According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, 10 people were killed on South Carolina roadways during the Memorial Day holiday period beginning Friday, May 26, at 6 p.m. until Monday, May 29, at 11:59 p.m. That is seven fewer fatalities than last year.
