BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – Berkeley County Council approved the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office budget for the fiscal year 2023-2024 at Monday night’s council meeting.

The 2023-2024 budget includes pay raises for the sheriff’s office sworn employees, non-sworn employees and administrative staff.

“I am thankful for the support of our county council to make sure our sheriff’s office is offering competitive pay to hopefully increase hiring and retain employees. With these improvements, my goal is to hire more deputies to serve and be more proactive in our community,” Sheriff Duane Lewis said.

The new budget for BCSO will allow the starting pay for all deputies to increase to $50,063.63. The previous base pay for deputies was $46,571.22.

A pay study was conducted to address pay compression throughout the sheriff’s office. Each sworn employee’s salary was adjusted according to the study.

Non-sworn employees and administrative staff will receive a 5% Cost of Living Adjustment on July 1, 2023.

“At a time when recruitment and retention are major concerns in law enforcement, providing the sheriff’s office the resources they need to protect and serve our county is critical and will remain a high priority of county council,” Berkeley County Supervisor Johnny Cribb said.

“I am proud to support our public safety officials and I understand the importance of resolving issues with the salaries of our Berkeley County deputies,” Berkeley County Councilman Josh Whitley said. “Our deputies provide safety and take care of this great county, and we are thankful. It’s crucial that their salaries reflect their hard work.”
