Accidental Teen Shooting In FL Leads To Moncks Corner Woman’s Arrest

LAKELAND, FL – A Moncks Corner woman is facing multiple charges following the accidental shooting of one of her teen passengers.

On Aug. 14, 2023, at 8:46 p.m., Lakeland police responded to the Night Owl Urgent Care for a call of a 14-year-old boy who was shot in the leg.

When officers arrived, they said they learned the boy was in the care of Katlynn Briley Mahon, 33, of Moncks Corner.

Police said Mahon was traveling from Orlando to Clearwater in the area of Interstate 4, east of the Polk Parkway when the boy was able to access a loaded gun in the vehicle and accidentally shoot himself in the shin of his right leg.

Mahon drove the boy to Night Owl for treatment. Medical professionals contacted law enforcement, and because of his age, EMS was requested to transport the minor to Tampa General Hospital for treatment. The victim was reportedly in stable condition, according to police.

Detectives were also called to the scene, and upon further investigation, it was learned there were of three teens in the vehicle (age 16 and two, age 14) when the shooting occurred. The minors were not Mahon’s children but were entrusted to her care.

Two handguns were in the vehicle’s passenger area, along with 32 grams of cocaine and 96 grams of Marijuana.

Mahon was charged with trafficking in cocaine, possession of cannabis over 20 grams, culpable negligence inflicting actual harm, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
