BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – Police are investigating following the death of a child in a car in Berkeley County.
Just before 4 p.m. on Friday, Charleston police said they responded to a call for service regarding a child in a locked vehicle in the parking lot of Bishop England High School.
Police said the child was pronounced deceased on the scene by Berkeley County EMS.
“Our detectives are actively investigating to uncover all the details surrounding this incident. Understandably, these investigations are extensive and require additional time to complete,” Sgt. Anthony Gibson said.
Berkeley County Coroner Darnell Hartwell confirmed that the child was 16 months old.
“At this time, the investigation revealed that the mother, who is an employee of the school, arrived at the school around 7:30 am with the child in her car seat which was in the backseat of the vehicle,” Hartwell said.
An autopsy was conducted Saturday, Aug. 26 and determined that the elevated heat temperatures contributed to the child’s death.
