BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – Central Berkeley Fire & EMS recently accepted a federal grant to hire nine additional firefighters. The department will receive $2,146,931 from FEMA’s Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant over a three-year period.
“The hiring of these personnel will be a huge benefit to our department and more importantly the community we serve. The ability to immediately respond with more apparatus and manpower, when we receive a call, will allow us to provide an even greater standard of care to our residents,” Fire Chief Tim Stephenson said.
The additional firefighters will be stationed at both the Whiteville and Cross fire districts. The federal grant will fund their salaries and administrative benefits.
Officials with Central Berkeley Fire & EMS said they will hire three firefighter IIs, three Firefighter II/EMTs, and three Firefighter II/Paramedics starting this month.
“This is a first in our department’s history not only to be the recipient of a SAFER grant, but
also to provide full-time career firefighters in the Cross district, which previously depended
on part-time and volunteer responders,” Assistant Fire Chief Colt Roy added.
