Berkeley County Severe Weather: Thunderstorms, Wind Gusts Expected Tuesday

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – Portions of Berkeley County are currently under a high wind watch or either a wind advisory until 10 p.m. Tuesday, the National Weather Service reports. Wind gusts up to 45-60 mph are possible. Other portions of the Lowcountry, including Charleston and Dorchester Counties, are also included.

A high wind watch is issued when the following conditions are possible: 1. Sustained winds of 40 mph or higher for one hour or more. 2. Wind gusts of 58 mph or higher for any duration.

A wind advisory is issued when the following conditions are expected: 1. Sustained winds of 31 to 39 mph for an hour or more. Wind gusts of 46 to 57 mph for any duration.

“As of this morning, forecasters with the National Weather Service predict widespread damaging winds and the possibility of tornados, heavy rains and flash flooding, with the most severe storm conditions likely tomorrow afternoon,” SCEMD officials posted to Facebook.

A flood warning also remains in effect until further notice for anyone living near the Santee River in Jamestown (Berkeley County). The river is expected to rise to 13.1 feet Thursday evening. Additional rises are possible thereafter. Flood stage is 10 feet.

The weather alerts come as a strong cold front is expected to push through the Southeast U.S. during the day and night Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. Ahead of the front, high winds, coastal flooding, dangerous marine conditions and severe thunderstorms will impact much of southeast South Carolina.

Another storm system will move through the region Friday; however, less impacts are anticipated, the National Weather Service reports.
