BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – A 3-year-old dog neglected and in poor health tied to a post near railroad tracks is currently in the care of Berkeley County Animal Center and receiving life-saving medical attention.
According to the shelter, a railroad worker recently discovered Honey, a Pocket Pitbull, starving, tortured by infected skin, and suffering from life-threatening complications. She also tested positive for heartworms.
“This poor girl was extremely underweight and her swollen abdomen was protruding significantly from her body. Scared, covered in old sores, and suffering from a severe case of flea allergy dermatitis, it is clear that Honey’s care had been severely neglected for quite some time,” Friends of Berkeley County Animal Shelter posted to social media.

“However, rather than getting this poor girl the care she desperately needed, Honey was left for dead by the person who was meant to love her the most,” the nonprofit continued.
To help pay for her mounting medical care, the shelter recently launched an online fundraiser. Shelter employers are asking the public to donate to Honey’s medical care at this link. Donors also have the option to send a get-well gift by donating supplies from her wishlist.
Honey currently remains in the care of Berkeley Animal Center. After being hospitalized for fluids and antibiotics, and changing her diet, the shelter said Honey’s health is improving, but she still has a long way to go.
“Once Honey is healthy enough, she will undergo spay surgery,” the shelter posted. “Honey will remain in our care for the duration of her recovery, after which, her foster plans on permanently adopting her.”
The shelter hopes to raise $6,420 for Honey’s medical care.
