BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis announced Monday the launch of a new public safety unit to address the continued growth in the county.

“Our county is continuously growing, and with growth comes new demands.” Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis said in a news release. “The purpose of the Public Safety Unit is to assist our citizens with a variety of calls for service quickly and efficiently. The use of the Public Safety Officers will allow deputies to remain available for more serious incidents.”

The increase in Berkeley County’s population brings more traffic-related incidents. According to Lewis, the public safety unit will patrol the roadways seven days a week to reduce traffic hazards. Each service truck assigned to a public safety officer is fully equipped to assist drivers.

Public safety officers can assist with a variety of issues including traffic control and direction, changing flat tires, disabled motorists, and vehicle lockouts.

Each public safety officer is also an emergency medical technician capable of providing on-scene medical assistance until the arrival of EMS in the case of an emergency.

They are also trained to take basic incident reports so that deputies are available to handle serious incidents and crimes in progress, Lewis said.
