BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – One person has died following a fatal collision early Saturday morning in Berkeley County, the South Carolina Highway Patrol confirmed.
According to SCHP Trooper Brandon J. Bolt, the crash happened around 2:20 a.m. on Interstate 26 near mile marker 203 in Ladson.
Brandon said the crash occurred when the driver of a 2000 Jeep SUV traveled off the right side of the interstate and struck a disabled car in the westbound emergency lane in the rear, killing the passenger.
The driver of the SUV was transported to a nearby hospital. The extent of their injuries is unknown.
“This is all the information that I have at this time,” Bolt said.
The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office has not released the name of the victim. The collision remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
UPDATE: The victim has been identified as Crystal M. Mitcham, 41, of Summerville, according to Berkeley County Coroner Darnell Hartwell.
